This Riad belonged to the German painter Hans Werner Geerdts.
It was his first residence and work-atelier. He arrived in Marrakech in 1963 and stayed there.
He died and was buried in the Old Koutobia Cemetery on August 22, 2013 in Marrakech.
The home and work art studio of Hans Werner Geerdts
His life began in Kiel – Schleswig-Holstein, Germany – on the 23rd of January 1925 in a middle-class environment. . .
He was held back from a fanatical national restraint. This worthless cargo dissolved after the collapse of the empire: irrevocable, unchangeable. Hans left his studies & employment as a civil servant to follow his true vocation: as a creative human, painting and writing.
The romping in foreign spiritual worlds that demand thoughtfulness began. His adventurous flights of thought and desire drove his creative forces to action.
Accordingly, the saying of prof. willi baumeister – his teacher – “Diligence pays off”.
He worked like a drawn man.
His exhibitions and publications reflect the creative periods: in Europe (Basel, Berlin, Düsseldorf, Paris, Milan, Rome, etc. ) in Japan and the U.S..
However, again and again the question remains: Who determines what art is?…The contemporary.
